# 15 · Bounded observation

## Purpose

Specify what remains adaptive after decisive control without treating people as experimental material.

This packet supports the existing Story Completion Workflow. Its central gate was author-accepted on September 6. It does not answer SC-010 Question 7 or advance that checklist. Central synthesis: Astra, reviewed for integration on September 5.

## Accepted result

Samuel's influence progressively lessens while Sylvan and Orzai's influence increases as the conclusion approaches. Samuel retains enough bounded choice to reveal how he adapts, but his ability to create new harm contracts. Sylvan and Orzai already control the decisive conclusion; the exact stopping thresholds and third-party protections remain open.

**AUTHOR-ACCEPTED DIRECTION:** adaptive choices remain observable while practical influence transfers away from Samuel; the exact prohibited consequences remain a narrower open design problem.

## Possibilities and tradeoffs

### 1. Bounded communications and authority claims

**PROPOSED:** Samuel can bargain, lie and issue logged requests while harmful execution is blocked. Strong method exposure; enough human response must remain unscripted.

### 2. Protected proxy interactions

**PROPOSED:** Consenting protected intermediaries can accept or refuse limited approaches. Rich social adaptation; consent must be revocable and protection cannot rely on deception alone.

### 3. Controlled resource competition

**PROPOSED:** Samuel makes real allocation choices over strictly bounded resources. Shows priorities under pressure; cannot manufacture deprivation for uninformed people.

### 4. Successive intervention tests

**PROPOSED:** Sylvan interrupts each harmful escalation while leaving a safe next choice. Demonstrates adaptive containment; clear rules prevent it feeling like a rigged humiliation exercise.

## Targeted follow-up questions

- What new uncertainty does each year resolve?
- Who can stop observation besides Sylvan?
- What happens if Samuel stops offending and cooperates?

## Scene test

**Non-canon situation:** Samuel’s next request would expose a person outside the agreed boundary; Sylvan interrupts it immediately, sacrificing a fuller pattern demonstration.

Record what each person wants, can know, can refuse, and can actually change. Name the observable difference between the selected alternatives.

- What prevented this same safeguard from protecting earlier generations? Distinguish earlier failures, new capabilities and newly acquired authority.
