# 20 · Reverse-book structure

## Purpose

Give Book One a complete present story while later books remain lived drama.

This packet supports the existing Story Completion Workflow. Its flexible ordering rule was author-accepted on September 6. It does not answer SC-010 Question 7 or advance that checklist. Central synthesis: Astra, reviewed for integration on September 5.

## Accepted result

Book One begins near the chronological end and later books dramatize earlier history, but their order will be determined during development according to what is most entertaining. The series is not committed now to a mechanical reverse sequence. Each earlier era must supply its own dramatic question rather than merely illustrate evidence already summarized.

## Confirmed facts and current working constraints

- Book One begins near the end; later books move into earlier eras.
- Live repetition reveals history before later books dramatize its original consequences.

These constraints inherit their source status. A working physical model, timing estimate, or accepted macro constraint does not establish every implementation detail.

## Unresolved gaps and contradictions

- Viewpoint; disclosure budget; first book closure; backward order; historical protagonists.

## Prerequisite decisions

Modules: 09, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19. Read their accepted results before closing this gate. Open prerequisites can be explored provisionally, but do not mark dependent choices final. Module numbers are topic IDs; use the dependency order in the workshop index.

## Central author gate

> What does Book One conclusively settle, and what deeper human question makes the first earlier-era book necessary?

**AUTHOR-ACCEPTED FLEXIBILITY:** choose the next era, viewpoint, and backward step according to dramatic value as the series develops; specific order remains intentionally deferred.

## Possibilities and tradeoffs

### 1. Progressively earlier books

**PROPOSED:** Endgame, then takeover, then Great War/exile. Strong formal identity; every earlier volume needs a fresh goal whose cost matters despite known endpoints.

### 2. Thematic paired eras

**PROPOSED:** Each later book follows a lived earlier conflict linked to one exposed mechanism. Flexible character focus; avoid feeling like an evidence appendix.

### 3. Backward principal chronology with brief later consequences

**PROPOSED:** Earlier action dominates while sparse later passages show changing interpretation. Connects series emotionally; requires strict limits so forward plot does not displace the promise.

### 4. One historical protagonist per major reversal

**PROPOSED:** Witness, compromised heir or insider carries each era. Strong independent human arcs; do not turn every narrator into a device for withholding facts.

## Targeted follow-up questions

- Which present decision is irreversible by Book One’s end?
- What does later history complicate without invalidating authenticated proof?
- Which historical person’s hope remains compelling when the reader knows the organization loses?

## Scene test

**Non-canon situation:** Book One ends with an authenticated small act of refusal whose circumstances remain unclear; a later book lets readers live the relationships and costs that made that refusal possible.

Record what each person wants, can know, can refuse, and can actually change. Name the observable difference between the selected alternatives.

## Adversarial questions

- If the later book merely explains a fact already summarized in Book One, what new dramatic question gives it a reason to exist?
- Which established constraint would this answer break, and what evidence would reveal that break before the payoff?

## Completion checklist

- [x] Answer the central question in the author's own words.
- [x] Identify the chosen possibility, a modified combination, or a different answer; explain rejected tradeoffs.
- [x] Resolve or explicitly defer prerequisites 09, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19.
- [x] Run the scene test above and state the consequence for the people involved.
- [x] Answer the adversarial challenge without granting unexplained knowledge or authority.
- [x] Record what remains working, proposed, or unresolved.
- [x] Obtain explicit author acceptance before updating canon or workflow progress.
- [x] Trace the accepted answer through the affected notes and rebuild both projections.
