The Witness belongs to the Great War generation and is not Orzai. The leading working possibility is that the Witness is one of Orzai's parents: one of the four children of the second-largest empire's founder couples, paired across those couples and placed into a constrained Great War role for development and training.
As the possible Thread A protagonist, the Witness is an earlier-era legitimate heir who interprets awakening as providence, then revises that belief over several identities. They eventually understand that the pressure is deliberate and dangerous people are present on purpose, but they may still miss the cultivation half of the system.
Their practical trap is that they possess level-five comprehension with roughly level-three authorization. Explaining what they know would expose the unauthorized knowledge and may cause their current identity to be closed. They therefore cannot safely seek help.
The Witness wants one person to believe them. If the role belongs to one of Orzai's parents, the other parent can become that crucial person: believer, doubter, corroborator, or endangered intimate. Their evidence and consequences can later pass through Orzai's family into Sylvan's modern Inheritor thread.
Open: which of Orzai's parents carries the role; whether both parents share portions of the function; Great War placement; prior identities; memory retention; specific losses; relationship consequences; surviving evidence; and final fate.
