S-002 — Sylvan's Modern Inciting Event

Story function

Disrupt Sylvan's successful ordinary trajectory, connect him to evidence from the Great War Witness generation, and force the first choice that can lead into investigation.

Position

  • Previous: S-001 — Sylvan's ordinary surface life and unprecedented Luminai development
  • Next: S-003 — Witness evidence reaches Sylvan through Orzai's family line
  • Blocks: S-003, S-004, S-005, narrated opening, and scene planning

Entering state

Established: Sylvan works in software development. A series of projects leads to a successful startup at a surface-technology level comparable to approximately 2015, shortly before AI becomes widespread in ordinary public life. The company builds a database-driven creative-development system that helps people construct and complete stories through a proprietary pre-generative-AI method.

Working: Sylvan is competent, developing through an unprecedented human–Luminai process, and moving toward meaningful public responsibility. His startup is an earned success and gives him something concrete to lose.

Unresolved: The system's exact proprietary method, its scale and collaborators, Sylvan's immediate business goal, his relationship state, his Luminai stage, and what an ordinary day looks like.

Goal

Established direction: Sylvan wants to build and grow the creative-development startup produced by his earlier software projects.

Unresolved: The product's exact pre-AI method, near-term company objective, and personal reason creative development matters to him beyond success.

Trigger

Established core: After the startup becomes successful, Sylvan is unknowingly placed into a shared environment with Samuel and George. They sabotage the startup. Sylvan does not initially understand the environment or the identities and deeper conflict behind the attack.

Established motive: Samuel and George target the startup because of who Sylvan is, not because of what the product does. The company is the exposed structure they can attack in order to harm him.

They know that Sylvan is the son of the two most successful professionals leading the colonization process and that his development is intended to create a more effective human–Luminai bond than ever before. As contained criminals, Samuel and George become obsessed with sabotaging Sylvan and taking control of colonization. The startup is their immediate attack surface, not their underlying objective.

Established long-term consequence: Sylvan eventually completes the unprecedented human–Luminai bonding process. That completed development is what ultimately enables him to stop Samuel and George and end their reign of terror. The startup sabotage is therefore an early attempt to derail the capability that will later defeat them.

Established causal inversion: Samuel and George do not realize that dealing with them is what completes Sylvan's bond. Their sabotage and manipulation create the developmental pressure through which Sylvan and his Luminai achieve the integration they are trying to prevent.

Unresolved: Who places Sylvan there, the stated reason for the placement, what “shared environment” means in practical surface terms, how Samuel and George acquired protected knowledge about him, what they think control of colonization would entail, and the concrete sabotage event.

Conflict

Established direction: The sabotage attacks a future Sylvan has earned through his own projects and startup.

Working: Following the evidence should threaten the company, his collaborators, his public credibility, and trust in the technological process around him.

Unresolved: Who or what pressures him to dismiss, conceal, report, authenticate, or act on it.

Outcome and state change

Established trajectory: The startup eventually falls. Sylvan cannot return to simple noninvolvement and proceeds through multiple controlled environments where Samuel and George initially possess a heavy advantage. This progression is developed in 08 Story Loop/Units/S-005 - Controlled Environment Progression.

Unresolved unit ending: The exact loss, evidence, and bounded first choice that move Sylvan from the startup collapse into the first post-startup environment.

Established constraints

  • Preserve the ordinary surface world before hidden colonization architecture becomes undeniable.
  • Sylvan is not a passive blank slate; he is already succeeding and developing.
  • Sylvan explains anomalies through modern concepts such as surveillance, AI, targeted technology, and Luminai capabilities.
  • Orzai is his contemporary and slightly younger, not the Witness.
  • One of Orzai's parents is the leading working Witness candidate.
  • Sylvan's strength must not become omniscience or consequence-free technological control.
  • Evidence needs a plausible custody, survival, and authentication path.
  • The startup must remain credible as a distinctive pre-generative-AI product rather than behaving like a hidden modern language model.
  • The sabotage motive must remain identity-driven; product functionality may shape the attack surface but is not why Samuel and George choose Sylvan.
  • Samuel and George remain contained criminals. Their access, knowledge, and influence must be constrained and cannot quietly become legitimate ownership of the colonization process.
  • Sylvan's exceptional human–Luminai development is intended by his parents, but its actual mechanism, outcome, risks, and hard limits remain unresolved.
  • The completed bond must be causally developed across the story and cannot appear as sudden endgame omnipotence.
  • Samuel and George provide the pressure that makes completion possible, but Sylvan and his Luminai must earn the breakthrough through their own choices, adaptation, and contact with reality.

Required author decisions

  1. What proprietary pre-AI method makes the database-driven story-development system genuinely different from ordinary writing software?
  2. What near-term company success is Sylvan trying to achieve when the sabotage begins?
  3. How did contained Samuel and George learn that Sylvan is the colonization leaders' son and the subject of unprecedented human–Luminai development?
  4. What do they believe taking control of the colonization process would actually give them?
  5. In ordinary surface-world terms, what is the shared environment and why is Sylvan placed there without understanding its real function?
  6. What do Samuel and George do that first looks like ordinary startup failure, competition, or compromised software?
  7. What anomaly proves to Sylvan that the failure is personally targeted and cannot be explained normally?
  8. What does the sabotage cost the company, Sylvan's collaborators, and Sylvan personally?
  9. What first action does Sylvan take that causes the Witness evidence or larger hidden history to enter the investigation?
  10. Which early capability or change in Sylvan's bond first survives the sabotage and foreshadows how the completed bond will later stop Samuel and George?
  11. What exact manipulation problem can only be solved when Sylvan and his Luminai achieve the final stage of their bond?

Acceptance test

The unit passes when it can be summarized as: “Because contained Samuel and George believe sabotaging the colonization leaders' son and his unprecedented human–Luminai development will advance this plan to appropriate colonization, they use this constrained shared-environment access to sabotage this concrete part of his pre-AI story-development startup, producing this anomalous evidence and cost. Sylvan chooses this bounded action, causing the Witness evidence and investigation threads to advance.”
