Story Exploration Lab

Purpose

This folder is a deliberately separate NON-CANON inspiration environment for generating possible stories, arcs, sequences, reversals, scenes, and alternate causal chains from the material already present in the Seeds of the Throne vault.

The goal is not to decide what the story is. The goal is to discover possibilities the author may not have considered.

This system exists alongside, but outside, the main Story Gauntlet in 08 Story Loop/.

Enter the lab through 08 Story Loop/GAP-ANALYZER when possible. The gap report gives the run a narrow target, authority packet, constraints, and token mode. Return surviving candidates to 08 Story Loop/DEVELOPMENT-ORCHESTRATOR; the lab never performs canon integration.

Hard boundary

Nothing generated here is canon.

Generated material may contradict current working structure, combine unresolved ideas, exaggerate possibilities, or explore alternate outcomes. This is allowed because the lab is for inspiration.

No generated idea may be copied into Canon, Characters, Systems, Events, or Draft Manuscript as established truth unless the author explicitly selects it and it passes the normal Story Loop / Author Gate.

Authority order

  1. Author instruction
  2. Established canon / current working facts in the vault
  3. Explicit unresolved questions
  4. Story Exploration Lab output

Exploration output never outranks established material.

What the lab should generate

The lab may produce:

  • alternate story arcs
  • possible causal chains
  • character reversals
  • hidden motives
  • scene concepts
  • containment mechanisms
  • political developments
  • betrayals
  • discoveries
  • failures
  • ironic consequences
  • structural parallels
  • foreshadowing ideas
  • sequence/chapter concepts
  • alternate versions of unresolved events
  • reader-facing reveals
  • combinations of existing ideas that have not yet been tested together

What the lab should NOT do

  • silently rewrite canon
  • resolve author decisions without approval
  • overwrite unresolved questions
  • assume speculative output is true because it is interesting
  • generate prose and treat prose quality as evidence of story truth or canon status
  • collapse multiple possible versions into one "correct" answer

Core workflow

gap packet -> retrieve -> constrain -> diverge cheaply -> shortlist -> optional character packets/prototype -> focused critics -> rank -> archive -> author promotion gate

Detailed process: STORY-GENERATION-LOOP

Output locations

  • Runs/ — individual generation sessions
  • Candidates/ — ideas worth preserving for later review
  • Rejected/ — useful failures and ideas explicitly rejected by the author
  • Templates/ — reusable generation formats

Promotion rule

A candidate only leaves this lab when the author explicitly says some version of:

  • use this
  • integrate this
  • make this canon
  • put this into the story
  • develop this in the main loop

At that point, move the selected idea into 08 Story Loop/ for causality, continuity, character, structure, and author-gate evaluation before canon integration.
