False Victory
Function
A defeated faction enters containment while believing it has gained control of the colonization process.
Working concept
The faction interprets its continued authority, environment, and access as proof of victory. The Throne figure knows the interpretation is false and maintains the deception for decades.
Pressure created by the mechanism
Every anomaly threatens to expose the lie. The Throne figure therefore has to preserve not only his own authority but the collective belief that the faction won.
Story questions
- Who first realizes something is wrong?
- What evidence could distinguish victory from containment?
- Why does the system allow the false interpretation to persist?
- How does the Throne figure suppress internal suspicion without making the deception obvious?
- What happens when members of the faction begin comparing incompatible memories or records?
