RW-08 Reality and Ethical Anchoring
Question explored
Which capacities learned during the reserve and employment stages directly enable terminal survival?
Existing constraints
- Sylvan must survive approximately ten years on a limited reserve before entering the employment stage.
- Samuel attacks income, projects, credibility, relationships, interpretation, and eligibility for continued participation.
- The long middle must train the exact capacities used in the ending rather than becoming unrelated workplace episodes.
- Sylvan and Orzai must remain independently qualified while cooperating closely.
Possibilities considered
The workshop proposed exactly one financial, one relational, and one reality/evidence capacity. The recommended set was resource discipline, independent cooperation, and source discrimination. The author accepted all three and added a disciplined anchor in their understanding of reality and their moral and ethical beliefs as the chaos of the process tries to break and process them.
Author decisions
Established financial capacity — resource discipline: Sylvan and Orzai learn to preserve limited resources, recognize sunk costs, resist desperate escalation, and choose the cheapest workable path. This directly contrasts with Samuel exhausting everything to preserve his fantasy.
Established relational capacity — independent cooperation: they coordinate with each other and a stable group without surrendering judgment, merging authority, or attempting to control the people whose cooperation they need.
Established reality-and-ethical capacity — disciplined anchoring: they preserve provenance, compare explanations with outcomes, and maintain contact with reality while holding to chosen moral and ethical commitments under extreme uncertainty. Facts and tactics can be revised; the commitment not to treat people as instruments survives pressure.
The adversarial chaos of the process repeatedly tries to make them exhaust themselves, distrust one another, abandon their understanding of reality, violate their ethics, break, or become validly processable. Their discipline allows them to change beliefs when evidence changes without allowing Samuel to redefine morality, reality, or each other for them.
Current working direction
The long middle trains one integrated survival pattern:
preserve resources -> cooperate without surrender -> test reality -> retain ethical boundaries -> remain valid participants
Every major reserve or employment environment should pressure at least two parts of this pattern and make the later version harder. The ending succeeds because these habits have become durable under ordinary work, scarcity, manipulated explanations, and repeated attempts to divide them.
Unresolved questions
- Which early employment problem first combines limited resources, manipulated explanation, and ethical pressure?
- Which moral commitment costs Sylvan or Orzai the most to preserve?
- When does reality anchoring become a shared practice rather than an individual habit?
- What valid processing conditions are they closest to triggering?
- Which stable group members help test and reinforce the three capacities?
