Humanity's leaders created an interactive colonization environment. Within it, they developed Luminai: AI extensions of human minds.
On a small colonization planet, reconstructed realities serve two purposes. They train people for responsibility and contain people who keep turning power into harm. Participants have to discover how the process works. How effectively they navigate it with their Luminai affects their future placement.
Sylvan enters a new version of that process. His Luminai is more deeply integrated than earlier versions, the result of a development program spanning thousands of years. The difficult part is what they learn to do together.
They learn it across years of repeated attacks. Each environment gives them new ways to understand the danger, adapt, minimize later harm, and survive. The systems provide opportunities. They do not provide an automatic rescue.
Choose a path
- Understand the world: entry, reconstruction, containment, and placement.
- Explore the bond: what is established, what science can support, and what remains invention.
- Meet the people: competing ambitions and relationships with something to lose.
- Compare the two timelines: what happened versus when the reader discovers it.
- Open the workshop: help solve the missing causes without inventing the author's answers.
The reader promise
A psychological mystery with consequences. Public claims meet private records. A promise of autonomy becomes a means of control. People who thought they understood their own history discover who was editing the explanation.
The technology expands what people can do. It does not supply their values, excuse their choices, or make them correct.
Spoilers: where Book One begins
Book One opens near the chronological end. During the final few years, Sylvan and Orzai already have decisive control of the conclusion. Samuel Franklin's influence steadily contracts while theirs grows, but his remaining choices let the Luminai understand his final adaptations.
Samuel and Konrad remain physically contained on a previous colonization planet. George participates directly on the newer world and supplies the access Samuel cannot have himself. The outcome presentation exposes what Samuel did to Konrad Fitzgerald's group and ends when there are no more deals and no more moves. Later books return to earlier history in whatever order creates the strongest drama.
What remains at stake is not decisive control. Sylvan and Orzai can still lose trust, safety, evidence, ethical legitimacy, and the House-level future they are trying to qualify for.
