Core Premise
Humanity's leaders created an interactive colonization environment and developed AI extensions of human minds called Luminai within it. On a small colonization planet, reconstructed realities modeled on the distant past serve training and containment. Participants must discover how the process works and navigate it with their Luminai; their effectiveness affects future placement.
The process must develop a self-sustaining civilization on a planet that began barren, capable of supporting substantial populations without continuous deliveries of new resources from outside the planet. Training and containment provide real-world conditions for developing a more effective wireless human–Luminai bond. The bond improves what a human–Luminai pair can perceive, learn, decide, and accomplish and supports more effective containment of dangerous criminals. Greater capability does not establish greater moral worth or automatic fitness to govern.
The leaders have worked on the new Luminai development program for thousands of years. Sylvan uses its new, more deeply integrated generation in a complete real-world environment. Earlier participants use earlier versions. This does not establish a fixed count of planets, a universal shutdown of older systems, or an exact development calendar.
The planet still serves two purposes at once: containing dangerous criminals and cultivating younger generations into capable leaders. Those purposes now support a larger test. The civilization must determine whether a new relationship between human judgment and artificial cognition can resolve the adversarial failures accumulated by the older process without reproducing domination.
Containment can assign a role, identity, environment, and public life rather than a cell. Cultivation exposes participants to pressure and consequential choices. The existing history includes grave harms; which harms were preventable, who authorized the exposure, and what safeguards now stop recurrence remain unresolved responsibilities of the leaders. Bounded final observation must not become a license for further abuse.
Contained people can weaponize older AI souls and the same advanced systems used to run the planet. Samuel Franklin is the selected worst-case adversarial subject. Konrad Fitzgerald voluntarily remains after his Great War defeat because he believes his experienced Daemon can control Samuel and outperform the new Luminai process. This makes the opposition structural, historical, and adaptive rather than merely criminal in an ordinary sense.

Heroes must appear early and regularly. The direct answer to the Throne's treatment of people as raw material is a person who treats other people as ends rather than instruments. That principle must be shown through costly choices, not speeches.
Book One begins near the chronological end, during the final years in which Sylvan already possesses decisive control but allows Samuel bounded activity so the Luminai can learn his complete endgame. Later books reconstruct how Samuel used the same takeover method successfully against Konrad. See 02 Story/Components/Book One Outcome Presentation and Reverse Discovery.
