title: The forty-second-birthday countdown
gate: How does Sylvan's forty-second birthday function as a visible dramatic clock rather than a date revealed at the end?
prerequisites: BA-01, BA-02
BA-03: The forty-second-birthday countdown
Purpose
Convert the accepted deadline into escalating pressure and prevent the terminal cutoff from feeling newly invented.
Established
The imperial route closes if Sylvan has not been successfully taken by his forty-second birthday. Samuel cannot restore the offer through escalation, reinterpretation, or another bargain.

Four possibilities
- Known public threshold: all principal participants know the date and disagree only about what completion requires.
- Asymmetric knowledge: Samuel and Konrad know the real clock while Sylvan initially experiences only unexplained compression and escalation.
- Misrepresented threshold: Sylvan knows a placement milestone exists, but Samuel gives him a false account of what the birthday decides.
- Progressive disclosure: the reader first sees operational deadlines, then learns they converge on the birthday and the imperial offer.
Central author gate
How long before the birthday does Book One begin, who knows the true deadline and stakes, and what recurring observable changes make the approaching cutoff felt without constant exposition?
Scene test
At three distinct points, the deadline changes a character's available options or willingness to spend resources.
Adversarial test
If the birthday matters only in the final explanation, it is a convenience. If everyone knows everything immediately, the reverse-discovery structure may lose its strongest mystery.
