Surface Civilization Era Reference

Core rule

The visible civilization on the colonization world should develop along an Earth-comparable technological and social trajectory. The Great War era is visually and materially analogous to the 1940s. The present surface civilization is analogous to contemporary Earth. The hidden colonization layer remains vastly more advanced but should not leak into ordinary surface scenes unless canon requires it.

This document abstracts historical development. It does not import real people, brands, countries, wars, corporations, celebrity culture, specific products, or exact Earth events into the story.

For generation, an era label defines a development envelope, not a cosplay instruction.

era -> region/culture -> location -> social context -> scene

The image generator should use the era packet to constrain clothing, visible technology, transportation, architecture/interiors, media, materials, and ordinary behavior before adding any story-specific design language.


1940s-equivalent — Great War era

Visual/social envelope

  • Wartime scarcity and industrial mobilization strongly shape clothing, materials, transportation, workplaces, public information, and household life.
  • Civilian clothing tends toward practical cuts, restrained fabric use, durable wool/cotton, uniforms/workwear, structured tailoring, hats, coats, leather shoes, and visibly repaired/reused garments where shortages matter.
  • Postwar portions of the decade can loosen into fuller silhouettes, more decorative clothing, and a stronger return to civilian leisure and consumer aspiration.
  • Radio, print, cinema/newsreels, wired telephones, physical mail, public notices, and face-to-face institutions dominate communication.
  • Cars exist but are mechanically simple by modern standards; rail, buses, walking, bicycles, military transport, shipping, and propeller aviation remain visually important.
  • Heavy industry, factories, warehouses, shipyards, rail infrastructure, mechanical workshops, analog instruments, paper files, maps, typewriters, switchboards, vacuum-tube electronics, and electromechanical control rooms define technology.
  • Homes and offices are mostly analog. Appliances exist unevenly; household labor remains visibly physical.
  • Public space should feel materially real and period-constrained: painted signs, paper posters, cloth banners, glass storefronts, incandescent lighting, wood/steel/brick/plaster, mechanical street infrastructure.

  • No smartphones, flat screens, LEDs, digital displays, modern tactical gear, modern cars, contemporary casualwear, holograms, or visible colonization technology unless explicitly required.
  • Do not make every scene military. The era also includes ordinary homes, cafés, churches/temples, schools, shops, offices, farms, parks, theaters, factories, ports, transit and family life.

1950s-equivalent — postwar consolidation

Visual/social envelope

  • Greater household consumption, domestic appliances, automobile ownership, television, suburban-style growth, mass retail and modernized public infrastructure begin to reshape ordinary life.
  • Clothing is comparatively formal by later standards: fitted tailoring, dresses/skirts and coordinated accessories in many settings, suits/jackets for men, but casual sportswear becomes increasingly normal outside formal contexts.
  • Television becomes a central household medium while radio remains important; landline telephones and print remain normal communication infrastructure.
  • Cars, buses, rail and expanding commercial aviation increase mobility. Road networks and parking become more visually important.
  • Kitchens, laundries, offices and shops contain more electrical appliances and purpose-built consumer equipment.
  • Architecture/interiors can show a cleaner postwar modernism alongside older urban fabric: large windows, simpler furniture, new materials, brighter commercial spaces and expanding residential development.
  • Social life still has strong institutional/formality cues even as youth culture and consumer leisure grow.

  • Avoid turning the decade into a single idealized suburban stereotype. Include urban apartments, industrial districts, rural life, working-class spaces, public transit, schools, hospitals, offices, diners/cafés, entertainment venues and civic buildings.

1960s-equivalent — mass media, youth culture, rapid modernization

Visual/social envelope

  • Clothing becomes progressively more casual, colorful and youth-driven. Earlier tailored elegance can coexist with cleaner geometric silhouettes, shorter hems, synthetic materials, brighter prints and later countercultural/bohemian influences.
  • Television is widespread and culturally central. Radio, records, print, landline phones and physical mail remain major media/communication channels.
  • Cars dominate many built environments, while buses, rail and commercial jet travel expand the sense of distance and mobility.
  • Consumer appliances are increasingly common; air conditioning, washing machines, televisions and telephones visibly change domestic expectations, though adoption varies by region/class.
  • Offices remain paper-heavy and analog: filing cabinets, typewriters, desk telephones, mechanical calculators, photocopying/duplicating equipment, large centralized computers in specialized institutions.
  • Architecture can move toward modernist glass/concrete/steel forms, large civic complexes, campuses, towers and planned development while older neighborhoods remain common.
  • Science, engineering and space-age aesthetics can influence design without implying actual futuristic surface technology.

  • "Space-age" should appear as cultural design influence, not as real advanced colony hardware.

1970s-equivalent — plural styles, electronics emerging, infrastructure maturity

Visual/social envelope

  • Fashion becomes broad and eclectic: bold colors/patterns, denim, synthetics, wider trousers, casual separates, sportswear, workwear, bohemian looks and more relaxed gender boundaries can coexist.
  • Ready-to-wear and synthetic fabrics make trend variation more accessible.
  • Television remains dominant; FM radio, records/tapes, telephones and print coexist with early electronic media and specialist computer networks.
  • Cars are deeply embedded in daily life, but transit/rail/aviation remain important depending on region.
  • Calculators, electronic instruments, early digital systems and centralized computing appear in technical/business settings, while ordinary homes remain largely non-networked.
  • Personal computers begin to emerge late in the decade but should still feel novel, specialized or enthusiast-oriented rather than universal.
  • Interiors can include warm earth tones, wood, plastics, patterned textiles, modular furniture and increasingly informal offices/homes.
  • Public institutions and infrastructure feel mature, bureaucratic and analog even as digital electronics begin appearing underneath them.

  • Do not depict ubiquitous PCs, internet culture, flat displays, smartphones or modern surveillance interfaces.

1980s-equivalent — personal electronics and visual assertiveness

Visual/social envelope

  • Fashion becomes more visually assertive: larger silhouettes, strong shoulders, bold colors/patterns, sportswear, business "power" dressing, street styles and visible subcultural variation.
  • Personal computers move into homes, schools and offices but coexist with paper files, typewriters, fax machines, landline phones and analog processes.
  • CRT monitors, floppy disks, keyboards, printers, early computer graphics, arcade/game hardware, cassette/video media and electronic office equipment become recognizable visual objects.
  • Networked computing exists mainly in institutional/professional contexts; most ordinary people do not live inside always-connected digital systems.
  • Cable/satellite-style media expansion, recorded video and music-video aesthetics accelerate shared visual culture.
  • Cars remain visually dominant; commercial aviation is routine; urban/suburban commercial environments become more heavily branded and electronically mediated.
  • Offices and public institutions are transitional spaces: analog bureaucracy plus islands of digital equipment.

  • Avoid making every computer sleek or compact. Hardware should be bulky, wired, desk-bound and visibly separate from the environment.

1990s-equivalent — casualization and the early public internet

Visual/social envelope

  • Clothing becomes broadly casual and minimalist compared with the 1980s: jeans, loose/oversized clothing, simple silhouettes, sneakers, layered casualwear and subculture-driven styles are common.
  • Personal computers become much more ordinary in homes, schools and offices.
  • Dial-up networking, email and the World Wide Web move from specialist spaces toward public life through the decade, but physical media and offline life remain dominant for much of it.
  • CRT desktop computers, laptops, floppy disks, CDs, pagers, early mobile phones, fax machines, landlines, camcorders and consumer electronics coexist.
  • Television remains powerful while cable channels, recorded media and the web fragment attention.
  • Retail, offices, schools and homes increasingly contain computers without yet being fully digitally integrated.
  • Cars and commercial aviation are mature everyday infrastructure; public navigation still relies heavily on printed maps, signs and human directions.
  • Architecture is mostly contemporary/non-futuristic; the digital revolution happens inside otherwise recognizable late-20th-century spaces.

2000s-equivalent — internet normalizes, mobile connectivity accelerates

Visual/social envelope

  • Fashion remains casual and media-driven: denim, layered casualwear, cargo/sportswear, fitted and loose silhouettes, increasingly fast trend turnover, and rising online/celebrity influence.
  • Internet use becomes ordinary household behavior; broadband grows rapidly while dial-up declines.
  • Desktop/laptop computers are common; mobile phones become widespread; smartphones appear late in the decade but should not dominate early-2000s scenes.
  • Email, websites, online shopping, digital photography, portable music, messaging and early social platforms increasingly affect everyday behavior.
  • CRTs transition toward flat-panel displays; physical CDs/DVDs, print, landlines and offline media remain visible.
  • Offices become more digitally networked while still using substantial paper and fixed workstations.
  • Public space starts to show people carrying phones and digital cameras, but people are not yet universally looking at touchscreen slabs.
  • Fashion dissemination and consumer behavior accelerate because images/trends move quickly through the internet.

  • Distinguish early, middle and late 2000s where useful. A 2001-equivalent scene should not look like 2009.

2010s-equivalent — smartphone society and peak casualization

Visual/social envelope

  • Smartphones become central personal objects; mobile internet, apps, social platforms, streaming, cloud services, GPS navigation and digital photography reshape ordinary behavior.
  • Laptops and flat-panel displays dominate computing; tablets appear; many media objects collapse into the phone.
  • Fashion becomes highly informal, fast-moving and globally networked. Athleisure, sneakers, slim tailoring, streetwear, revival cycles and social-media-driven trends coexist.
  • People routinely photograph food/places/each other, navigate by phone, message constantly and consume media while moving.
  • Offices, schools, retail and public services become heavily networked; digital self-service and online scheduling become normal.
  • Ridesharing/delivery-style services and app-mediated commerce change street behavior without requiring visibly futuristic infrastructure.
  • Interiors can be contemporary glass/wood/concrete, open-plan workspaces, cafés with laptops, chargers and Wi-Fi, but should retain regional/cultural variation.

Generator guardrails

  • Avoid making all contemporary spaces minimalist tech-company interiors. Ordinary homes, aging infrastructure, older cars/buildings and analog remnants remain everywhere.

Sylvan and Orzai transitional work envelope

Their early professional world spans a 2015–2020-equivalent transition before widespread public generative AI. Visible creative work may include ordinary cameras, microphones, lighting, editing stations, drawing tablets, color-calibrated displays, 3D workstations, render previews, storyboards, reference photography, small motion-capture or spatial-capture setups, asset libraries, and early real-time or immersive experiments. Health and nutrition work may include conventional clinics, kitchens, classrooms, studios, public institutions, wearable or self-tracking data, anatomical references, food/process models, and privacy-conscious records.

Do not visualize this as effortless generative production, holographic medicine, automatic perfect 3D reconstruction, or open access to hidden colony systems. Small teams still plan, film, model, revise, render, verify claims, manage files, and make visible tradeoffs between time, accuracy, cost, and persuasion.


2020s-equivalent — contemporary present

Visual/social envelope

  • Surface life should look broadly recognizable as present-day Earth rather than science fiction.
  • Smartphones, broadband, streaming, cloud services, digital payments, delivery/logistics platforms, videoconferencing, wireless earbuds, laptops and connected services are deeply embedded in daily routines.
  • Remote/hybrid work is a normal possibility in many professional roles, though large parts of society still work physically on-site.
  • Fashion is highly eclectic and revival-driven, with casualwear, athleisure, streetwear, workwear, oversized and fitted silhouettes, sneakers, technical fabrics and vintage influences coexisting.
  • Contemporary vehicles, transit, aviation, retail, schools, hospitals, offices, apartments, suburban development, civic buildings and public spaces should look familiar unless a specific Seeds culture modifies them.
  • Digital systems are common but usually screen-based or embedded in ordinary devices; the world should not automatically display holograms or visible superintelligence.
  • Present-day social behavior includes frequent phone use, online identity, ubiquitous cameras, rapid media cycles, remote coordination and digitally mediated commerce.

Generator guardrails

  • The existence of Luminai, Daemons, synthetics and hidden colony AI does not justify cyberpunk streets or visibly futuristic consumer devices.
  • Hidden advanced infrastructure should surface only when the scene deliberately crosses from ordinary civilization into the deeper colonization system.

Surface / hidden split

Treat the world as two overlapping visual layers:

  1. Surface civilization — period-appropriate visible life, technology, fashion and institutions.
  2. Colonization infrastructure — vastly advanced systems normally hidden, mediated, disguised or restricted.

Never infer visible futuristic technology merely because the underlying world is technologically advanced.

Translation rule

The decade reference supplies a historical development envelope. It must be combined with Seeds-specific culture rather than copied literally.

Example:

1970s-equivalent + coastal republic + municipal records office

means: a paper-heavy analog office with period-appropriate clothing, furniture, phones, files and limited electronic equipment, interpreted through that invented republic's architecture/material culture. It does not mean a recreation of a specific Earth city or organization.

Anti-anachronism QA

Flag:

  • visible consumer technology outside the decade envelope;
  • clothing silhouettes/materials that belong primarily to a later era;
  • modern interface language in earlier decades;
  • cyberpunk/holographic shorthand in ordinary surface scenes;
  • hidden colony technology appearing without canonical cause;
  • architecture/props that imply a different technological stage than the scene.

These references are primarily useful as a broad industrialized-Earth development baseline. They should not be treated as a claim that all Earth regions developed identically or that Seeds cultures must reproduce Western/American social history.
